The History Of Forex Trading

US gold certificate (1922)
US gold certificate (1922) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Forex trading is a business concept that commenced centuries ago when business men used to trade in coins. To understand the Forex history, it is important to look into three of its watershed moments, here being; the gold standard, the Bretton woods agreement and the floating foreign exchange rates.

During the gold standard system, gold was used as a fixed standard to measure the value of commodities. This is because the development of the currency system was backed by gold. Ideally, as long as there was enough gold reserve to back the amount of currency in the market, the gold standard system worked just fine.

The Bretton woods agreement came into force to replace the gold standard system, while the floating exchange rates abolished the gold system and was adopted by the world community in 1976. The forex history cannot be complete without mentioning the development of the forms of trading currently involved in forex trading.

Essentially, forex trading involves the exchange of foreign currencies or denominations, where the value of currencies is independent of other foreign currencies. Some of the forms of forex trading that are though to be extremely risky include, index futures, trading in futures and options trading. They are considered risky because they involve trading in the value of currencies that cannot be ascertained.

Over the years, there has been a tremendous change in the forex market that has changed the forex history. This has enabled the forex market to have a centralized system thereby connecting centers into an integrated international market that any individual from any location in the world can trade in.

Forex Exchange Trading History

Global foreign exchange market turnover2
Global foreign exchange market turnover2 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The foreign exchange market is an exchange for the global decentralized trading of international money. It gives people the options trading in the foreign market. The market determines the values of different currencies.

The exchange market helps those who want to international trade and investments by helping with currency conversion. It is also the carry trade. In a typical transaction, the group buys a quantity of one currency by paying a quantity of another currency.

Some of the reasons why the foreign exchange market is different is because of its geographical dispersion, the low margins of profit compared with other fixed income markets, and the leverage to enhance profit and loss margins.

As for the forex history, the modern foreign exchange market began to form in the 1970s after decades of government restrictions on foreign exchange transactions. In the 1980s trading grew more and the greatest proportion of trades was within the United Kingdom and the United States was second in trading. The top currency traders as of today are Deutsche Bank, Citi, Barclays Investment Bank, UBS AG, HSBC, JPMorgan, Royal Bank of Scotland, Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs. Also, the most traded currencies by value today are United States dollar, Euro, Japanese yen, Pound sterling, Australian dollar, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Swedish krona, and New Zealand dollar.

So, as you can see the market is a good place to do trading with different currencies.

Burger King Rises as McDonalds Fails

English: A selection of value-menu hamburgers from American fast food chains. Clockwise from left to right: McDonald's McDouble, Burger King Buck Double, Sonic Drive-In Jr. Deluxe Burger, Wendy's Double Stack. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
In the last quarter it was shown in a recent quarterly report that Burger King (BKC) performed better in sales than rival McDonald's.

BKC executives did not reveal whether the higher restaurant sales, along with new customers transferring business from McDonald's or other fast food restaurants were the reasons for this change.

CFO, Daniel Schwartz announced that they are expecting to maintain their share of business growth and indeed, sales have continued to rise during the month of October.

One strategic change in operations is the value menu which focuses on making food affordable for families. Promotions such as the barbecue menu have also attracted many new customers over the past summer.

This fast food restaurant has made a point of attracting elderly and senior customers, both men and women. Offering salads, wraps and smoothies which are popular menu items for these demographics.

This fast food business has traditionally been known to be mainly popular with young males, 20-26. Making changes to the menu, gearing it toward the McDonald's style gives them a wider range of customers to sell to.

Earnings for Burger King went up by seventeen cents a share, exceeding the fifteen cents analysts had predicted for the period.

In June, the company paid out a quarterly dividend at four cents per share.

Burger King was a private company before it was purchased for more than three billion dollars by 3G Capital Management in Brazil.

A shell company, Justice Holdings, acquired BKC via a reverse merger and then the company went public through an IPO.

Last summer, the shares became available on the market first at $14.50. Last Friday the share price went to $14.95. Because of Hurricane Sandy, the NYSE was closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Image via CrunchBase
In a few days time Google will release its quarterly earnings. The figures are due to be delivered on the 18TH October as the market closes for trading. Larry Page the Chief Executive Officer of Google has already intimated that the company has had a highly successful three months and that profits are up by around 24%. Page is happy to report that the gambles they took concerning YouTube, Android and Chrome have indeed paid dividends. This means that the latest google earnings release will be welcome news for its investors.

Google behind the numbers:  In the main the majority of the vast sum of money that is earned every year comes from publicising. Around one billion people use the giant search engine every month; in real terms this means that one person out of seven uses Google on a regular basis. Thinking again in terms of google behind the numbers - add up the time that is spent using the giant search engine and it is in excess of two hundred billion minutes a year. Google consumes mammoth amounts of electricity, somewhere in the region of two hundred and sixty million watts per year.

The Board of Directors were happy to give the go ahead to a proposed stock dividend; this means that the company as a whole can concentrate on its long term goals. As the google earnings release draws ever closer it is time for investors to realise that they have a stake in an exciting company. Google has stood by its promise and it has improved people's lives.  Technology may still be in its infancy but Google has a lot more to offer in the future.
